Learning Nerd’s Diary #78

Welcome back Learning Nerds!

This week I had a realisation while talking to a friend that learning experiences are often more than what meets the eye. From culture to ecosystems to journeys - learning is so much more complex that we imagine it to be!

👀 Sneak peak

Here is what I have in store for you this week -

💭 Learning About Learning: Building Learning Ecosystems

🥜 Learning Nugget: Digestive Learning

💥 Coolest Thing I Learnt This Week:

  • Designing experiences that enable and sustain behavior change

  • The Learning Journey

  • Culture Design Canvas

🔦 Spotlight: LxD Lab Rewind <May + June>

Let's jump right in!

💭 Learning About Learning

Every learning ecosystem has two parts - a core and a satellite.

The Core

The Core is essentially the ‘learning experience’ part of the ecosystem. This includes structured elements like classes, expert sessions, content, books, projects and more. The core part of the learning experience is largely the same for everyone.

Remember, your core can be of different sizes depending on your context! Some ecosystems might required more structured elements than others

While the core is a key part of the learning ecosystem, it is often not enough. This is where the satellite comes in.

The Satellite

The Satellite is the ancillary parts of the learning ecosystem. These are more informal and unstructured like corridor conversations with seniors, co-curricular activities, participating in festivals/ non-learning events and more. This satellite can vary a lot based on a person’s interest.

Remember, for your satellite, don’t over-think it. The idea is to just create the right conditions for your satellite to thrive!

Building Learning Ecosystems

The biggest mistake we make as learning experience designers? We end up only designing the core and forget about the satellite.

By combining the core and the satellite, a learning ecosystem becomes dynamic and comprehensive. The synergy between the two components helps us build well-rounded learning ecosystems.

🥜 Learning Nuggets

Learning is like food.

What you ingest as as important as what you digest.

💥 Coolest Thing I Learnt this Week

Designing experiences that enable and sustain behavior change

I came across this article on how to get people to change behaviours sustainably. What I love about it are the actionable frameworks interspersed with examples from Kaospilot's practice.

The Learning Journey

A gentle reminder from Karthick that the course is not the destination :)

Culture Design Canvas

A really interesting inspiration from the Business Model Canvas but for designing cultures. Can’t wait to use it for one of the experiences I’m designing!

🔦 Spotlight

The LxD Lab just wrapped up 2 months and what a wild journey it's been! ✨ Harsh Doshi & I took out some time last week to reflect on the Discovery Phase we just wrapped up & here is a quick summary -

1️⃣ 20 Learning Experience Designers from India came together to build an LxD Handbook

2️⃣ We spent the first few weeks learning about each other, leading to 100+ conversations within the group 😱

3️⃣ After much debate on the issues we face at work everyday, we narrowed down on the topic of the handbook - Motivation

4️⃣ We got into smaller groups and wrote MULTIPLE drafts of the handbook all WHILE questioning & iterating the overall structure

5️⃣ And finally, we arrived at a draft of one chapter and a table of contents and are in the process of sharing it with our awesome mentors over the next 10 days!

We can't wait to share more about this in the coming few weeks! If you'd like to stay in touch about the handbook & more...

Love & Learning

Until we meet next week!
